Pacifier question?! How to wean off?

My son is about to be 10 months old. He has never absolutely had to have his pacifier all of the time except when he us crying upset or going to sleep. Now he will just suck on it when he sees it which I try to keep them out of his sight. But he always has it when falling asleep but not while sleeping. Also in the car he fusses so he will take it to calm down. I'm thinking about starting to wean him off of it but not sure how to go about putting him to sleep with out itandhow to deal with his crying without it??
